Restaurant: Fraser Cafe
Location: 7 Springfield Road, Ottawa, ON
It was probably one of the first “Nice Days” I’ve had in Ottawa, considering I arrive in town right at the beginning of the gruesome Winter! Nevertheless, I was set to satisfy my tastes buds and I had heard a lot of great things about Fraser Cafe. Not to mention, I heard the Chef’s name was Simon Fraser (FYI – The name of my University!), so I get the Food-Gods were begging me to give it a try (LOL).
The first thing I notice when I entered the door, was the lovely interior; the small bistro/coffee shop look was clean with a funky and fresh vibe. I had a feeling this place would be would be packed for Weekend Brunch, so we arrive around 1 before a storm of people started to line up!
Luckily, we were seated after a few minutes by a friendly and patient waitress. The menu does change seasonally here so it’s always good to ask for suggestions because you want to taste “The Best of The Best” of course!
My friend and I both started off with the Daily Fresh Fruit Smoothie. Lucky enough, it had mangoes in it, one of my favorites! The blend was quite perfect as the tang from the Mango really enhanced the creamy texture of the Coconut and Banana flavors. Not too sweet and you could distinctly taste each individual fruit. I’m not a big fan of super thick smoothies, so this one was just right! I also liked the fact that it still had some fruit bits in it (so you know it’s fresh!).
Just by the looks of this, you can tell they give you quite a large portion! This plate of Huevos Rancheros is a compilation of Grilled Bread, Eggs, Spiced Black Beans, Pickled Onion Feta. Although this seems to be quite a filling meal, you would definitely not want to waste one bite! Served along with a side of greens, you really get a variety on your plate. I felt the Pickled Onion Feta did a great job enhancing my appetite. While the kick from the Spiced Black Beans brought an interesting flavor when eaten with the Eggs and Bread. Although I only had a few bites of this dish, it was very tasty despite my lack of interest for beans.
Now this was absolutely Excellent! With a certain mindset you could believe that all Hollandaise Sauces tastes the same, but this would prove you wrong. Unlike the heavy and thick sauces they serve up at IHOP or Denny’s, Fraser Cafe pours on a slightly lighter version, yet still rich in flavor. In a lot of diners, sauce seems to overpower the taste of the original ingredients. But here, the freshness of the tomato, the savory taste of the Peameal Bacon, and that natural Poached Egg flavor still present itself evidently in every bite.
But actually my favorite component of this dish is the Grilled Potatoes! Hands down, the best I’ve had, well that I can remember. Crisp and exploding with a lightly spiced aroma!
I was actually pretty full from the other dishes, but I could not resist ordering a sweet addition to my meal. Plus, how can you go wrong with Pancakes?! The portion you see in the picture is actually only a “Half-order” (Could you imagine how much a full order would be?!?) These Yogurt Pancakes completely filled me up, but they were great nonetheless! They had a certain bounce to them when you cut into the stack.
I think I’d be unjust to really judge these Pancakes based on my experience. I was quite stuffed after a few bites due to the portion of my main course. So I did not enjoy it as much as I thought I would because the Fruit Compote and Whipped Cream made it too heavy for me to finish (I’d blame my stomach, not the Pancakes!)
This is a definite MUST VISIT! I’m very interested in tasting their new array of Brunch Delights once they have changed Menus; I’m sure they will not disappoint! Not only amazing food and service (they really aim to please;)), but I’m in love with the atmosphere. This is the place to go for a nice afternoon chat with friends, although I’m certain dinner will be enjoyable here too!
